Annie Malone Warned Poro Agents

4/5/2014

Annie Malone in 1934 warned her Poro agents and beauticians about the possibility of a white invasion in the black hair care industry.  We have witnessed how many non-blacks have benefited because of this industry and we can expect this trend to continue. Is it possible to reverse this phenomenon? Is it important that we try to regain the black hair industry? What do you suggest we do to make this happen?

I believe the Black Hair Care business ought to be owned by African Americans. I've lived in several states and what I have observed are businesses staffed by other than African Americans and selling predominantly black hair care products. Annie Malone invented Black hair care products and that business should be a Billion dollar plus industry for African Americans

Thank you for your comment, Mr. King. I certainly agree with your comments and it is very important that we try to regain the Black hair industry. We must step up and start supporting our own beauty supply businesses. It is possible to reverse this phenomenon by educating others of the significance in keeping dollars in our own communities and creating our own jobs. In addition, our young people should be taught to have pride in whom they are and that requires educating them of their past history.

As a graduate of Poro School of Beauty Arts and later to become owner of my Alma Mater, I want to say we should now begin to use all of the resources at our disposal to create a 21st century Poro presence in the beauty industry.

Let's do it together, collectively, and in the spirit of operational unity.

Thanks,

Marvin
