Bravo! This commentary is exceptionally well written, poignant and concise...I appreciate your voice here. I have long stated the problems with Hollywood and the liberties taken in the name of "entertainment." I was not at all pleased with the distortion of FACTS in the movie "Harriett" and thus, could not acquiesce after viewing "Self Made." I created a YT video and wrote a blog sharing my discontent for this project. I'm so glad to bear witness to this article!

I understand this is a fictional story that referenced the lives of real people. It saddens me that it ended up not accurately representing them. I do think, however, that the societal experiences shown are true to life.

Certainly, the movie showed that one hundred years ago, like today, there were systemic challenges that black people had to overcome, especially for one who chose to open a business. I feel that the movie was made for entertainment purposes, not historical, and therefore, should have included a statement that the character of Addie Monroe was fictional and not based on any individual, dead or alive. Thank you, Evon, for your comment.

I applaud the effort you and your organization is doing to ensure that Ms. Malone's legacy is not lost. I must honestly say that for years, I respected and felt proud of Madam C J Walker in her achievements, however, I watched the series the other day and it was the first I heard of Ms. "Monroe". Ironically, I was on Facebook the following day and someone spoke about Ms. Malone and how the mini-series did not do justice to her legacy and so I began to look into Ms. Malone. I am so saddened that I never knew of this phenomenal woman and her legacy. I am not proud of two women, who look like me, who changed history. I will definitely share this story to all I come into contact with and continue to stick my chest out even more proudly of a legacy that I can be proud of. Thank you so much for your work!!!
